Times have changed in the browser world since my last browser test. Microsoft finally has given us a real browser (Internet Explorer 9), the social browsers (Flock) have faded and Mozilla Firefox has taken up the Google Chrome model of pushing out new versions every time their CEO is breathing. So it’s time to put the browsers to the test, again!
The Firefox 9, alpha, vs Firefox 6 stable and Google Chrome 15 (dev channel):
Sunspider Benchmark (here):
* the Sunspider Javascript benchmark is definitely the most relevant browser speed test in the context of current rich browser applications
- Firefox 9: 227.9 ms
- Firefox 6: 299.3 ms
- Google Chrome 15: 267.3 ms
V8 Benchmark v6 (here):
* the V8 browser rendering test is made by Google to test browser rendering capabilities.
- Firefox 9: 5733
- Firefox 6: 2415
- Google Chrome 15: 9407
Acid3 test:
* the Acid3 browser rendering test is measuring a browser’s compliance to current CSS standards. As most browsers pass the test without issues, I will most likely give up on this test. Currently, only Internet Explorer 9 continues to fail this test.
- Firefox 9: 100%
- Firefox 6: 100%
- Google Chrome 15: 100%
Summary: Firefox 9 looks like a significant step forward performance-wise. Even as an alpha build, it feels stable and capable. On the other hand, Google Chrome 15 feels like a step down in terms of performance. However, Google Chrome’s memory management remains the best despite significant improvements on Mozilla’s side.
