Dragons of Autumn Twilight (2007)

So … the time is near. One of the most popular and well-known fantasy series since “Lord of the Rings” is near it’s presentation on the Big Screen (hereinafter known as TBS). The Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman have long been on the storyboard for movie-making yet no producer dared to invest the time and money needed for a three-film endeavor. Until now.

Set to launch this autumn (nice matching with the title), the movie inspired by the first Chronicle has only one shortcoming: it’s animated. Well, the creators claim this is actually a good thing, since animation allows for more fantasy elements to be added, to a lower cost … yet … I can’t help thinking that the Lord of the Rings precedent clearly expanded the domain of live fantasy movie making. Also, given the Harry Potter movie series, I think Raistlin, Tanis & Co are more than worthy of a live movie series. Just think that WB (Warner Bros) is considering bringing Terry Pratchett’s Discworld to a live movie … so why not Dragonlance too?

I’ve been waiting for this movie for so long that I’m not going to pursue this matter. Nobody is willing to put the money forward and that’s that. The movie’s official site gives away many details, including some of the prepared artwork (as the movie won’t be the trendy full 3D animation, but a 2D/3D hybrid, which, by the way, is more to my liking … since not everyone can make animations as detailed as the Final Fantasy movies).

How much will be cut? Well, the writer mentioned an outline of the storyline which includes almost everything, with the notable exception that the introduction will be pushed forward. It was written with the full cooperation and involvement of the two original writers so I’m not worried about missing the most appreciated parts.

All in all, this is the production that I consider to be most-expected for this year.

See you at the premiere!!
